Enjoy Boatloads of Fun at Annual Show

From a boatbuilding challenge to races to a corrugated boat regatta, the 32nd Georgetown Wooden Boat Show on Oct. 15-16 features an array of activities for the whole family.

Then, of course, there are the boats. More than 100 classic wooden boat are displayed on land and water during the annual show, held the third weekend in October on the waterfront and along Front Street in historic downtown Georgetown.

Visitors can stroll the grounds to view an array of wooden boats - sailboats to trawlers, day cruisers to yachts, and row boats to canoes/kayaks. Expect to see inboards, outboards, maybe even paddle boards. You’ll be blown away by this exceptional show and these beautiful boats.

Other activities include children’s model boatbuilding, a youth sailing regatta, knot tying lessons, maritime arts and crafts, music, and food!

The Boat Building Challenge gives two-person teams a total of four hours to construct a sea-worthy rowing skiff using lumber and plans provided. This year, teams will build a 12-foot rowing skiff – the Carolina Bateau – within the time limit. The teams are judged on building speed, workmanship, and rowing speed when they test the completed bateaux in a rowing relay on the Sampit River. At the end of the day, cash prizes are awarded to first, second and third place winners.

The Corrugated Boat Regatta takes place on Sunday, Oct. 16. The fun starts under the big tent on Broad Street where participants can choose to build their boats ahead of time and display them under the tent or can build their boats on site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants stretch the limits of their ingenuity to design boats and oars made entirely of corrugated cardboard. No other construction materials are allowed, with the exception of tape and waterproofing. No wood, no metal, no motors—just corrugated cardboard and imagination.

The Regatta begins at 2:30 p.m. when the cardboard boats are launched on the Sampit River from the floating docks at Francis Marion Park.

Come enjoy a great time that’s for a great cause, as proceeds benefit the South Carolina Maritime Museum
