The No. 1 attraction for everyone is the beach. Pawleys Island offers the largest free public beach access lot in Georgetown County, located at the south end of the island. There are eight other beach access points on the island, so your family has plenty of opportunity to enjoy the surf, sand, and salt water. Rent beach gear from Vacation Equipment Rentals and they will bring the chairs, umbrellas, and other gear to you.
Kids love animals and the Lowcountry Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens is a wonderful place to get an up-close look. The Zoo is home to native species that have sustained an injury or were born in captivity in zoos. Species you will see include alligators, grey foxes, red foxes, river otters, white-tailed deer, ducks, Bald Eagles, hawks, owls, herons, and egrets. Tickets are $20 for those 13 and over; $10 for children 4-12 and free for children 3 and under. The Zoo’s hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Generations of families have enjoyed a stop at The Hammock Shops Village, with its 21 stores, restaurants, playground, and craft demonstrations. Kids enjoy activities such as tossing a bean bag in a round of corn hole and learning to make balloon animals. Expect live music on the weekends and special holiday events.
Huntington Beach State Park offers 2,500 acres of nature with sweeping views of the Atlantic, boardwalks through marshes, and fishing spots. Kids can see wildlife such as alligators and birds on a walk along the park’s causeway. The Nature Center features a saltwater touch tank, a baby alligator, and a 2.5-mile walk to search for seashells.
A Pirate Adventure aboard the Sea Gypsy is a magical adventure that young and old alike will enjoy. The 90-minute experience includes an hour at sea, a treasure hunt, and a battle with pirates. The event starts with face painting and dress-up, then the ship sets sail. Tickets and check-in take place at the ship’s store in the front parking lot of the Dead Dog Saloon in Murrells Inlet.
Crabbing is an age-old favorite activity for families on Pawleys Island. All you need is a roll of string, a swoop net, and raw chicken parts that can be purchased at a local grocery store. Tie the chicken to the end of the string and drop it into Pawleys Creek. Then wait for a crab to take the bait.
